All serious collectors have a reference library of Pocket Watch books.

For the novice collector lack of information can be a serious problem when searching for new railroad watches to add to a collection. As prices for desirable pocket watches increase, so too does the difficulty of finding and identifying them. When you do run across an interesting one at an antique shop or on the internet, being able to quickly put a value to it is essential.

As you get more and more involved in your railroad watch collecting hobby, it becomes apparent that the purchase of authoritative publications in your area of interest is an investment rather than an expense. It is easy to 'pass' on the purchase of an expensive pocket watch when you know that it doesn't measure up to certain standards. Or, to quickly and confidently fork over $200 on a pocket watch that you know is worth three times as much. How do you know this? How can you be sure? Because you have taken the time to educate yourself on the details and nuances of railroad watches.

There are many good books and price guides on the market dedicated to pocket watches. Most have sections on railroad watches, and all have pages and photos of watch models from specific manufactures. These books not only give you in-depth information on the history and product line of the featured companies, but they will generally also have current price trends, production dates, and applicable marks.

These books can generally be found at the major book stores, in the collectibles section. If they don't have a particular book, they will be happy to order it for you, if it is still in print. Many of the books on pocket watches listed below are often available at on line auctions, opening the possibility of not only finding an authoritative publication but also snatching up a great bargain too.
